Phuket authorities are warning travellers that pork imports are banned on the island as well as in Thailand. The Department of Livestock Development justified the ban on the grounds that there is a serious risk of introducing a strain of one of the infectious animal diseases (African swine fever) into the country.
The Phuket Information Centre has issued a warning to travellers stating that special units with beagle sniffer dogs are working at airports to detect the banned delicacy in the luggage of travellers arriving at the airport. This innovation can be read on posters placed at airports. The information is written in several languages (Thai, English, Chinese, Lao and Vietnamese). The information states that imports of pig meat products are banned and that those who violate the ban will be charged with violating the law on animal epidemics. It is not possible to find out from the information what the penalties are, but you can ask about them by studying the law. During the last arrest, more than thirty kilograms of prohibited product were seized from a Filipino arriving from Manila.
