News from Dubai
In the United Arab Emirates, and in particular in Dubai, the authorities have taken unprecedented measures to attract tourists: they have reduced the price of alcoholic beverages and abolished the purchase of a licence to buy alcoholic beverages. Now in order to buy a drink containing alcohol a licence can be obtained free of charge. All the buyer will need to do is to provide his passport or identity card. Alcoholic beverages will be available at any shop in Dubai.
This measure has been taken by the government for a period of one calendar year, to help resuscitate licensed establishments after the quarantine measures of the pandemic and the current difficult economic situation in European countries. This innovation will not only affect the retail chain of shops, but also restaurants, bars and cafes. Now visitors to catering establishments will be able to purchase alcoholic beverages at a thirty per cent discount.
The changes have also affected the fines for drinking and storage of alcoholic beverages by persons who do not have a licence. However, alcohol can only be drunk in authorised places: at home, in a hotel room, in a bar or restaurant and only by those who have reached the age of 21.
