A long-awaited law banning smoking on the beaches of the popular resort of Tenerife, which is located on one of the largest Canary Islands, comes into force.
The authorities of Santa Cruz have agreed with the Spanish Ministry of Health to ban smoking on public beaches. For those who like to smoke, there are specially designated places. This law was introduced in order to reduce air and soil pollution in the coastal area, to minimize harmful factors where people come to rest and recuperate, and the authorities hope that in this way the number of smokers will be reduced. Not only regular cigarettes are banned, but also electronic cigarettes and hookahs. For violators of the ban are provided no small penalties.
Smokers, while enjoying the view of the ocean, do great harm by leaving behind a huge amount of non-degradable garbage (cigarette filters contain various types of plastic). For lovers of littering there is a fine of about two thousand euros. Restaurants, cafes and bars operating in the coastal zone are required to equip places for garbage collection, otherwise they will not escape punishment.
Tenerife is not the first resort, which introduced a ban on smoking on the beach, such a law is already in force on many beaches.
